Sodium Thiosulfate

  • Sodium Thiosulfate is a reducing agent that can treat hydrogen sulfide (H2S) in oil and gas wells. H2S is a toxic gas often present in crude oil and natural gas and can be dangerous to workers and equipment.

Sodium Thiosulfate is added to well fluids to chemically react with H2S and convert it to harmless sulfur compounds. Sodium Thiosulfate reacts with H2S to produce sodium hydrosulfite and sulfur. The sulfur precipitates out of the solution, leaving the well fluid free of H2S.

In addition to its use as a reducing agent for H2S, sodium thiosulfate has other applications in oil well cementing and remediation of contaminated soils. As a cement retarder, sodium thiosulfate can slow down the rate of cement hydration and setting, allowing more time for placement and curing.

In contaminated soil remediation, sodium thiosulfate can reduce the toxicity of heavy metals by complexing with them and forming stable, non-toxic compounds.
