Sodium Nitrite

  • Sodium Nitrite is commonly used as a corrosion inhibitor in concrete admixture additives. It is added to concrete mixes to prevent corrosion of the reinforcing steel bars, which can weaken the structure of the concrete and reduce its lifespan.

When added to the mix, sodium nitrite reacts with the iron in the reinforcing steel to form a protective layer that prevents the steel from corroding. This protective layer is created by converting iron oxide (rust) into Iron Nitride, which is stable and non-corrosive.

Sodium Nitrite is generally effective as a corrosion inhibitor in a wide range of temperatures. Still, it is often combined with other corrosion inhibitors, such as calcium nitrite or organic corrosion inhibitors.
