Calcium Nitrite

  • Calcium Nitrite is commonly used as a corrosion inhibitor in concrete admixture additives. It is added to concrete mixes to prevent corrosion of the reinforcing steel bars, which can weaken the structure of the concrete and reduce its lifespan.

When added to the mix, Calcium Nitrite reacts with the iron in the reinforcing steel to form a protective layer that prevents the steel from corroding. This protective layer is created by converting iron oxide (rust) into Iron Nitride, which is stable and non-corrosive.

Calcium Nitrite is generally effective in a wide range of temperatures. It is particularly effective in preventing corrosion in concrete exposed to chloride ions, which are present in seawater and deicing salts. The nitrite ions react with the chloride ions to form less aggressive compounds, reducing the likelihood of corrosion.
